Humbled by my son

Today was such a junk day. Things did not work out the way I had planned, and I was extremely tired and grumpy. I had zero patience, even with my son, and I feel so bad about that now. All he wants is to spend time with us and have our attention, but I got so caught up with how badly things were going that I didn't want to stop and play. Poor baby.

Anyway, by the end of the day I remembered a rule from 19 kids and Counting - compliment your children 10 times more than you criticize. I made an extra effort to do that, and make up for all the hours that I'd been grouchy. Needless to say things went a lot more smoothly once I changed my disposition and started putting him first. Getting a big old realization of the important things in life (ie the "rocks in the jar") like a slap to the face. Just what I needed.

The final pull-on-the-heartstrings moment came when, while getting him ready for bed, I told him we needed to say prayers. Before I had a chance to open my mouth, I heard Ka'ihi say "Bless Mama, bless Papa, bless 'Ihi, bless Tutu Bird, bless Grandma, bless Grandpa, bless Aunty Sara...." on and on till he'd mentioned everyone's names he could remember! I've never seen him do that before, and we don't usually mention everyone individually like that (just a collective "bless our family" unless someone needs a specific prayer). I was seriously astonished. I didn't have the heart to say anything for a few minutes until he was done.

Talk about a humbling experience.
