I like it. Who'd have thunk it? But I do. It's another little part of Relief Society that I secretly enjoy. I can't openly sing it's praises yet because I am still part-way in denial that I have "grown up", "become like my mother", and "gotten old". But I like to think it's because my generation is making it cool. We are all cute girls and have cute ideas and like to get together and talk and laugh and share and love. I always feel so good after visiting teaching (oh my gosh I'm such a goody two-shoes) but there's something special about meeting with sisters in the gospel and feeling our kindred spirits connect.
I have experienced many wonderful blessings through visiting teaching, and developed some great relationships with people that I may not have really gotten to know otherwise. Heavenly Father truly knows my needs and, if I am open to His will and willing to have faith, I am always given more than what I could have ever asked for myself. I have also grown spiritually, and my attitude toward service has changed. I'm less focused on myself and failure, and more concerned with using my skills and experience to help and contribute, in some small way, to the building of the Kingdom and the care of Heavenly Father's family.
I love to read Mormon Mommy Blogs, and found one about visiting teaching here. It has this cute little handout you can download and print and give to your sisters.
“Whether we are married or single, old or young, we have a duty to defend and practice the truths found in “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.”
“. . . The only way we can accomplish this is by seeking, receiving, and acting on personal revelation. The real power in this great worldwide sisterhood lies within each woman.Though we may see ourselves as weak and simple, we all share a noble heritage and can develop a faith that is equal to that of remarkable, faithful women who have gone before us. We have a vital role to play in helping build the kingdom of God and preparing for the Lord’s coming. In fact, the Lord cannot accomplish His work without the help of His daughters.”
- Julie B. Beck General Relief Society President, Ensign, Nov. 2008, 108–11
Reading this quote reminded me of my personal Spiritual Heroes and inspired me to believe that I could one day be as faithful as they were/are. That's a bit intimidating, but nonetheless gives me the hope to continue to grow. In the meantime, I'll keep trying to get 100% visiting teaching!
