Worst Mother Award

I am the worst mummy ever!

Ka'ihi had his first trip to the dentist on Friday because he chipped his tooth pretty bad and I was worried it might give him problems.

Turns out he has 2 cavities, and a bit of decay on his other teeth too. The culprit? Me! Despite brushing his teeth at least twice a day and not giving him a bottle anymore, and zealously limiting his sugar intake, his teeth are still in need of repair. Why you may ask? Because he still nurses at night! Apparently the milk pools in his mouth and sits on his teeth.

Shoot me now.

The Dentist was pretty nice about it, explaining how the sugar would be eroding the enamel and since his teeth aren't fully developed yet it's liable to cause more damage. But he said I'm supposed to brush every time I feed him AND floss!!!

Who flosses a baby's teeth? I figured they still had big enough gaps between them that there was no need. Oh how wrong I was.

So anyway he's got to go back and have them cleaned and fixed, and it's high time I weaned. I'm freaking out a bit sad, since I had planned to breastfeed till he was 2, but since he shares our bed/room and can smell the milk, there's no way to stop him eating at night without weaning. Unless anyone else has any bright ideas.

This is not gonna go down well. Ka'ihi is still pretty hooked on breastmilk. And is very vocal in his demands. And, let's be honest, burning an extra 500 or so calories a day will be sorely missed.

On the other hand, getting a good night's sleep, although a distant memory, would be most welcome in our lives again. And I can't be tired and sluggish when it comes to chasing my son all over the chapel grounds, or stopping him from running onstage during Kamuela's performances.

Ok. It's go time.

  1. sorry i've been awol on your blog, but i'm sorry about ka'ihi and his dental problem. i haven't weaned my second girl from night nurses yet, but i think what we did for our first was water in the middle of the night for a week or two before weaning her completely. sleep has always been a struggle for us and our girls because they've always been in the same room as us (and now on the same bed, yikes), but at least the night feedings stopped. good luck. and miss you!

  2. Thanks for the tips, I'll try them out. We have the same situation, one bedroom and in our bed. It's hard! But I love having him cuddle us.
